WoW- Empty Net by Toni Aleo

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill @ Breaking the Spine
where you share an upcoming release that you're anticipating on reading.

Empty Net
The Assassins Series #3
by
Toni Aleo

Definition of an Empty Net: When a team pulls the goalie for an extra attacker, desperately seeking a goal.

Audrey Parker was in a horrible place.
She hated her job, her sister was getting married and moving out, but worst of all, she was in love with a total jerk. No matter what she did, every guy she met hurt her. All she wanted was her happily ever after. Her Prince Charming. Her Lucas Brooks! She didn’t know how to change her life but she knew she needed too.
Feeling like she was about to hit rock bottom, Audrey wakes up next to Tate Odder.

Tate Odder had lost everything.
After being brought up from the Assassins’ farm team, the Florida Rays to the Nashville Assassins, Tate hopes he’ll forget everything he has lost. He doesn’t. Each day gets harder to live in a place he doesn’t know. Even being the first rookie goalie to shut out an opposing team three times during the Lord Stanley Cup Finals, he still felt empty. With the loss of his parents and sister still heavy on his heart, Tate isn’t sure how to live like everything is okay.

But when he wakes up beside Audrey Parker, things start to change. She turns his life upside down with her kooky sense of humor and her bright clothing. She is intelligent and beautiful, and for once, he doesn’t feel empty.
Will Audrey be the person to fill the holes in Tate’s heart, making him whole again?
Or will another player ruin everything, leaving him feeling forever like an empty net?

I admit... I have been fortunate enough to read this awesome novel!!! If you liked Taking Shots and Trying to Score you will LOVE Empty Net. I fell in love with Tate. He is so sweet, kind and caring. *sighs dreamily*  Never thought I was a "gap" woman but I am now... you'll know what I mean after you read it! *winks*  Audrey is so fun and crazy, but like her sister, a hard headed and determined woman. I now know that I can use hippogriffs as an excuse for almost anything. *laughing*

Empty Net was scheduled to be released on Sept 11 but knowing her... she'll want to release it tomorrow!! I'll keep you all posted!!

Don't forget to check out the rest of The Assassins Series:

Taking Shots

Elli Fisher has never thought she was good enough. Let it be her job, her weight, her love life; nothing. She has walked through life for the past six years in a daze, never thinking that life could be good again after the abuse she endured from her ex-boyfriend. She is lonely, sad, and depressed, that is until she meets Shea Adler. After doing a promotional shoot for the NHL team, the Nashville Assassins, she meets the hunky hockey player who shoots a puck, shattering her world.

Shea Adler is tired of the life he was living outside of the rink. The girls, the money blowing, the drinking, everything had to stop and it all did when he met Eleanor Fisher. He had never met anyone like her. She is feisty, witty, shy, and simply gorgeous. When he laid eyes on her, it was as if he was taking the hardest hit of his life into the boards, and he had to have her. Elli is a little skeptical of Shea, but he knows that they are meant to be together, and he needs her in his life.

But Elli just doesn't understand what Shea could see in her. She is overweight, loud, and not even that pretty, so why would someone so gorgeous and so amazing want to be with her? It seems that no matter how hard she tries to shake Shea off, he isn't going anywhere, and for the first time, Elli doesn't feel alone.
But can Elli throw her insecurities out the window and love Shea with everything inside of her? Or will she let a past relationship, and her family ruin any chance of her being happy?

Would Elli miss her shot at love?

Trying to Score
Fallon Parker’s dream was to have her family’s wine company at the top of all wine magazines and to have a cellar of her own. After graduating from college, she has worked hard to make that dream a reality, even if that meant having a nonexistent love life. She had her chance at love and that was a bust, so she put everything into the wine company. After becoming the official sponsor of the Nashville Assassins, Fallon finally feels like everything is falling in place, that is until Lucas Brooks comes back into her life.

Lucas Brooks hates his life. He is lonely, he is sober, and he is angry. On the ice, when he’s not in the sin bin, he the leading scorer in the NHL but off the ice, he is a mess. He threw away the most important person in his life, and has regretted it ever since but when Lucas sees Fallon again after being traded to the Assassins; he is bound and determined to get her back. Even if she wants nothing to do with him.

The sexual tension between Fallon and Lucas is electrifying as Lucas tries to convince Fallon that he is a changed man. Fallon tries to resist Lucas, but it is so hard when all her body wants is his. But when Lucas finds out that Fallon has been keeping a huge secret from him, the game he is playing stops and penalties are called.

With new rules and new players on the ice, will Fallon and Lucas be able to work out their differences and work as a team or will they be left trying to score alone.

Toni Aleo

I am a wife, mother, and hopeless romantic.
I have been told I have anger issues, but I think it’s cause of my intense love for hockey!
I am the biggest Shea Weber fan ever, and can be found during hockey season with my nose pressed against the Bridgestone Arena’s glass, watching my Nashville Predators play!
When my nose isn’t pressed against the glass, I enjoy going to my husband and son’s hockey games, my daughters dance competition, hanging with my best friends, taking pictures, and reading the latest romance novel.
I love things that sparkle, I love the color pink, and did I mention I love hockey?

Review- Dancing Naked in Dixie by Lauren Clark

Dancing Naked in Dixie
by Lauren Clark

Travel writer Julia Sullivan lives life in fast-forward. She jet sets to Europe and the Caribbean with barely a moment to blink or sleep. But too many mishaps and missed deadlines have Julia on the verge of being fired.

With a stern warning, and unemployment looming, she's offered one last chance to rescue her career. Julia embarks on an unlikely journey to the ‘Heart of Dixie’—Eufaula, Alabama—home to magnificent mansions, sweet tea, and the annual Pilgrimage.

Julia arrives, soon charmed by the lovely city and her handsome host, but her stay is marred by a shocking discovery. Can Julia's story save her career, Eufaula, and the annual Pilgrimage?

After trying to deal with the tragic loss of her mother and feeling of abandonment, Julia begins to live her full speed ahead. She uses the break neck pace as a wall to keep others at bay and from getting attached. She thinks this is a good way of coping until her new boss arrives and cancels all of her fast paced plans.  Unsatisfied with her work, her new editor sends her on what she views as the most undesirable assignment ever. Julia is sent to Eufaula, Alabama. She is immediately tossed into the ringer as an outsider in a small town. While memorable cast of characters that can usually be found in a small town trying to learn about their  big city visitor, a devious plot that could change the face of Eufaula forever begins to unfold. As Julia is shown around town by Shug, she begins to see how out of control and chaotic her own life truly is. After what can at least be an eventful visit, Julia returns to the usually comforting chaos of New York City only to find herself wishing things would slow down. Several months pass and she decides to return to Eufaula for the Pilgrimage. Just as many surprises lie in store for this visit as her last.

I did enjoy reading Dancing Naked in Dixie by Lauren Clark. There was so much in this book. There was some wonderful historical information about the town of Eufaula and the families that help build it. It is well written and put together. It was a delightful glimpse into the hierarchy and delightful characters that can make up a small Southern town.  My only complaint was there were a couple of times when I just wanted the story line to move along already.  However, overall it was a fun, light hearted and entertaining read. I am giving Dancing Naked in Dixie by Lauren Clark 4 out of 5 stars.

Interview- Lauren Clark

I would like to thank Lauren Clark
for taking time out of her busy schedule
to be with us here at Nose In A Book!

Lauren Clark is the author of Stay Tuned and Dancing Naked in Dixie. She writes contemporary novels set in the Deep South; stories sprinkled with sunshine, suspense, and secrets.

A former TV news anchor, Lauren adores flavored coffee, local book stores, and anywhere she can stick her toes in the sand. Herbig loves are her family, paying it forward, and true-blue friends. Check out her website atwww.laurenclarkbooks.com.

Welcome to Nose In A Book. I thank you for taking the time to join us. Could you start out telling the readers a little bit about yourself?

I grew up in a small town in Upstate New York, walked to school, played sports (field hockey, soccer, swimming), and was a cheerleader. I was NOT shy. I was precocious--in fact, my mother tells a story about how I slipped away from her in a department store when I was four years old, got into the elevator, and was met by a saleslady who asked me "Where are you going?" Evidently, I looked at her and said, "I'm going UP."

I am married with two boys, ages 7 and 14, and they are my world. I'm the mom who goes along on all of the field trips, loves to help with school projects, and cheer on my children in whatever they decide to pursue! I'm so happy that they adore books as much as I do--my 14 year-old has his own Kindle. I also love being silly with my boys--we make up stories, build Legos, play superheroes (I regularly tease my 7 year-old by telling him that I am "Super Mommy to the Rescue" with a pink cape and boots ... and he rolls his eyes and laughs. It's our special joke!)

When and how did you know that you wanted to become a writer?

I started trying to write stories as a teenager, but had a lot of distractions (sports, cheerleading, school, boys) so I didn't stick with it. When it came to college, I went into Journalism and Public Relations, so spent a lot of time interviewing, editing, and writing. That said, it was good experience, but it wasn't the same as learning how to write fiction.

Most writers' first novel never see the light of day. Can you share the summary of the first book you wrote?

(Cringe) It was about a teenager girl who shoplifts on a dare, then ends up stealing on a regular basis because it makes her feel temporarily better about her life (with a workaholic mother and minus a father).

How did you come up with the title?

Dancing Naked in Dixie jumped into my head one day when I was thinking about a novel about a travel writer who comes to Eufaula. My first idea was to have the protagonist discover some fabulous "dessert" or treat that was so good it made everyone want to dance naked! The more I thought about it, though, I felt it would be straying too much from the plotline that needed to be Julia's journey--a physical journey from New York to Eufaula, Alabama, but also a personal journey of growth and discovery about herself and her own family.

My first novel, Stay Tuned, came from being in the television business for a long time. I wanted something catchy, short, and easy to remember.

What was your favorite chapter to write and why?

I love the chapter in which Julia is trying to catch a cab in New York and two wealthy women get there first. In typical Julia fashion, she tells a little fib and says she's sick with Athazagoritis (which she also made up and isn't even an illness). He little white lie haunts her later in the book, when the two women want to send her flowers and cards at work...but none of Julia's co-workers knows what they are talking about!

What is was the most fun scene to write in Dancing Naked in Dixie? That would have to be the scene with Julia trying to get the cab from the two wealthy women in New York City. Julia's tired, cold, and wet, she really wants to go home and the two ladies are rude so she makes up a story that's she has an illness (Athazagoritis), which, of course, is also not real. The women buy the story, though, and spend the next twenty minutes quizzing her on medications, recovery, and the sickness itself. This scene is so Julia, she's very impulsive, though not meaning any harm to anyone. When she acts before she thinks, then Julia often ends up regretting it -- as is the case for these two ladies, who continue to try and "take care of her" long after the cab ride.
What was the most emotional scene to write? Hands down, the night where it starts snowing in Eufaula. It's a weather rarity, so people get really excited and race outside to see it. Of course, a light dusting of snow looks really magical, like someone sprinkled powdered sugar on rooftops and front yards. Add that to a starry, bright night, and it's the perfect setting for romance. Unfortunately for Julia, Mary Katherine thinks so, too, and makes a public display that Shug is still her boyfriend.
Where did you get your ideas or inspiration for the characters in this book? I lived near Eufaula for many years and it is one of my favorite places to spend a long afternoon. The homes are amazing, the food is fabulous, and the people take a lot of pride in their community. The Pilgrimage is a great event, especially the candlelight tour!! I had the idea of a big-city travel writer coming to the Deep South for a story--and Eufaula seemed like the perfect place for her to visit. Throw in some controversy, secrets, danger, and romantic tension, and it all fell into place!  For the characters, many people in Lower Alabama (LA, as the locals call it) are die-hard Auburn University football team fans. "Jordan" is the last name of one of the famous coaches at Auburn, and I thought it would be fun to name a whole family after people or things that represent this much-loved university.
Is there anything in this book readers may not pick up on that you want to point out? I'd love for readers to take away that --like Julia-- we all have had preconceived notions about people or locations that may seem different or foreign. Dixie is about opening up to experience everything that life has to offer -- and finding happiness in the most unexpected places.
What is a fun fact about you that readers may not know?
I love superheroes and know        waayyy too much about the powers and history of different characters. For Mother's Day,       I went with my two boys (7 and 14) to see "The Avengers" movie! I think I liked it as       much as they did (And of course, it helped that all of the good guys were pretty darn hot             ... and that Scarlett Johansson kicked butt as Black Widow.

What is your current work in progress?

I am researching for my next novel, The Pie Lab, which is a real restaurant in Greensboro, Alabama. This story will follow a girl who’s gone off to a big city (like Atlanta or New York) and vows NEVER to come home. She’s forced to return to Greensboro, though, when her romantic relationship falls apart. Since she’s burned a lot of bridges, it will be interesting to see how she makes amends.  The Pie Lab, as a business, is a great concept, as it offers on-the-job training and the owners are very active in the community. Added bonus…the pies are delicious! The Pie Lab has been featured in Southern Living and The New York Times.

What is your favorite part to research for a book?

I love to research a new town or city. With Dixie, I had lived near Eufaula for several years and visited many times (including during the Pilgrimage). When I was writing Stay Tuned, I researched Macon, Georgia -- the businesses, the city's population, ethnic makeup, colleges nearby, etc -- I want to know everything that I possibly can to make the setting authentic. I like to print out pictures of the place I am writing about so that I can glance up at them while I am writing.

What's your favorite gadget?

I love my Macbook! I had a Dell until it died, and switched over to Apple. I've never looked back :)

Name three book crushes.

Paris Series - Juliette Sobanet
Guilty Wives - James Patterson

Review- Lucky in Love by Jill Shalvis

Mallory Quinn has had enough of playing it safe. As a nurse and devoted daughter, she takes care of everyone but herself. And as the local good girl, she's expected to date Mr. Right. But for once, she'd like to take a risk on Mr. Wrong. And who could be more wrong than Ty Garrison? The mysterious new guy in town has made it clear that he's only passing through, which suits Mallory just fine. Besides, his lean, hard body and sexy smile will give her plenty to remember once he's gone...

For the first time in his life, Ty can't bear to leave. Helping this sexy seductress-in-training walk on the wild side is making him desire things he shouldn't -- including leaving the military for good. As their just-for-fun fling becomes something more, Mallory and Ty wonder if they could really be this lucky in love. After all...anything can happen in a town called Lucky Harbor.

Lucky Harbor is a small coastal town in Washington. It is a tight small knit community complete with all the characters and personalities that thrive in such small towns. So when a mysterious guy shows up in town, everyone is curious about him. He's labeled Mysterious Cute Guy on the town's Facebook page and kept tabs on. The last thing Ty (MCG) expected was to find solace with Mallory. She didn't expect the town to be so involved in her dalliances with Ty. What could possibly go wrong?!

I loved this book!! It was sweet, sensual, and funny. I was chuckling and often as I was fanning myself. Jill Shalvis kept the pace moving but still let you get to know all the great characters that reside in small town USA. I fell in love with Ty and Mallory from the beginning and was rooting for them the entire book. I haven't had the pleasure of reading the first three books of the Lucky Harbor Series but they are definitely on my list now.

I am giving Lucky in Love 5/5 stars because it charmed me from the beginning. It let me feel the joy, the sorrow, and the heat! *grinning*

Review- A Night Away by Carrie Ann Ryan

A Night Away
by Carrie Ann Ryan

Kade Jamenson has been mated to Melanie for almost two years. They’ve been through mating circles, battles, loss, misunderstandings, and finally, the birth of their son, Finn. The world is in turmoil around them as the Redwoods engage in war with the Centrals. But for Kade and Melanie, the turmoil is also happening at home. The responsibility of a restless baby and their Pack has taken a toll and they need a break.

Not from each other. But from their Pack. Just for a night.

Kade takes Mel away for a romantic getaway and leaves Uncle Maddox alone with baby Finn. The Omega of the Redwood Pack may be adept at emotions but the idea of a baby may be beyond his immense capabilities.

Author’s Note: This is a novella set between books 3 and 4 to give you a taste of Mel and Kade. It is best that you have already immersed yourselves in the Redwood Pack world, however even new readers will enjoy a glimpse of one of the Redwood’s favorite couples.

A Night Away was a fun short read to introduce new readers to the Redwood Pack Series. You get a small glimpse into the relationships of the Jamenson family, the Alpha family of the Pack. This novella focuses on Kade and Mel, parents struggling to reconnect after having a baby and fulfilling the needs of their Pack. We get a small idea of Jasper and Reed's lives. While we do not have the stories of Adam and Maddox yet, there are hints of their story.

I admit, I had not read the previous books when I decided to review this for Carrie Ann Ryan but I am glad I did. I am looking forward to learning more about the Redwood Pack. There is no deep character or plot development, but as stated, this is a novella from the middle of a series and should not be expected.  I am giving A Night Away 4/5 Stars and looking forward to more.

A Night Away Excerpt

Mel looked into Kade’s green eyes and focused. She needed time with this man. Just the fact that she’d thought for a moment he’d leave her meant she did. And Kade cemented the fact that she was scared. Yes, she could admit that at least to herself. She was scared to death. She was floundering as a mother, as a mate, and a Pack leader. She needed a moment to escape. To sit back and remember why she loved doing all these things. To remember that she loved her mate and needed him more than the air she breathed.
She placed her palm on his face, his unshaved cheek scraping against her skin and she shivered at the thought of where else his five-o’-clock shadow could scrape her. His tanned skin looked like caramel against her pallor. She wanted to see where else they’d contrast when they lay naked in a sweaty pile.
She needed a break. If only for a night.
“Okay,” she finally whispered. “That sounds wonderful.”
Maddox released a sigh, and Kade smiled. “Good.”
“Where are we going?”
“It’s a surprise.” Kade gave a smoldering look and Mel melted into a puddle.

Vampires or Werewolves: Guest Post- Carrie Ann Ryan

Vampires or Werewolves: The Debate of an Era
A choice that hurts my brain. Honestly. Fangs or Hair? Claws or Talons? Blood or um... Blood? You see, I love them all. I can’t choose! If we forget the old versions of both in which they all are evil and blood sucking and gross, we can just look at what we know.
Vampires, sparkly or not, have a sense of old age and wisdom. You see them with their chiseled features and tormented souls and you fall in love. Now, if you think back to the late 90’s, they were just on the cusp of transitioning between soulless creatures and hot heroes who save the world. In essence: Buffy’s Angel. *sigh*
But look at Seth Green’s werewolf in that show? Brainless monsters that were more demonic dog like, rather than the wolves we love today.
Werewolves, to me, are more in tune with the Earth. They are muscled and manly and highly family oriented in Packs. They do have an animalistic side that may cause them to have a short temper and growl more, but I still love them. I love their over protectiveness and hearing them from their wolf counterparts.
Why do I have to chose? Oh, yeah, I kind of did when I wrote A Night Away. LOL In my world there are no vampires. I didn’t see my world with them and their culture. I couldn’t picture it. Maybe it’s because the books I’ve read recently have left me cold towards vampires, while werewolves are earthy and warm, but that is what my brain did.
In my world I also have demons, witches and some other goodies that you will find out later on in the Redwood Pack series. But sorry, no vampires. I love reading the conflict between the two major genres, but I didn’t want to write about what I love to read. I wrote what came to me. I mean, one on my favorite all time characters is Bones from the Night Huntress novels. And Ms. Frost wrote about vampires with no shifters in her world. Love it.
Now, I made HUGE generalizations here. There are so many different types of each, plus thousands of types of other types of paranormals. But that’s what makes romance novels an amazing idea. You can find what you want, when you want.
My werewolves are connected to the Earth, but also connected to their human world. Jasper Jamenson and his family are highly loyal and fierce fighters. I love my boys and their mates. I wrote about werewolves now, but who knows, I could chose vampires next.
I don’t need to chose between the two, I can open a book, or click on a Kindle link, and find my hero. Why chose?
Now for you guys – Vampires or Werewolves? I’m in a wolfy state so I went with my hairy friends. But what do you like? Why?
Two lucky readers who comment blog will be randomly selected to win signed bookmarks. Good luck! Be sure to leave your email!

Review- Trying to Score by Toni Aleo

Trying to Score
by Toni Aleo

Toni Aleo returns with another emotion packed story for her sophomore novel. This review is gonna be difficult to keep spoiler free so be prepared to have a few fall from my fingers...Fallon has spent years believing that Lucas cheated on her. The decisions she has made in her life are all based on that one event. She has closed herself from all males, except one, her son. Aiden is Fallon's reason why for everything she does. For this reason, she refuses to give in to Lucas' charms for fear of him not only breaking her heart but Aiden's as well. Yes, Fallon is very stubborn to the point of want to shake her into submission but her reason's for it are understandable. By Lucas being calm, patient(ok~ so we wasn't always calm & patient, he persevered and never gave up), and persistent, he show Fallon that he IS the man she once believed him to be. Well, the improved Lucas. When they were together, Lucas had an alcohol problem, which lead to the situation that caused the breakup.

Lucas and Fallon rely on their friends, Shea and Elli Adler, for guidance and support and for a slap upside the head when they're being too stubborn. It is always great to characters from previous books make an appearance. We first met Shea and Elli in Taking Shots. *sighing at the memory* Shea and Elli help Lucas and Fallon on the right path. Over time, Lucas gets a chance to show Fallon the man he is. Eventually, she believes that everything he has ever told her and felt for her is true.

I have to give Trying to Score 5/5 stars. I loved the story. I loved the characters. I loved the reappearance of past characters. I loved the relationships. I loved... alright, I just loved the whole thing. I hope you will love it as much as I do.

Q&A with author Toni Aleo

I am so excited to have Toni Aleo stopping by Nose In A Book today! She is one of my favorite authors and, more importantly, a friend.

Story time~ Toni and I started emailing after I had started the blog and wanted to get the Trying to Score release countdown widget... actually, it was Feb 14, 2012. The same day I started Nose In A Book. We have been going nonstop since!!
(Much to our husbands' dismay) lol

Karen~I know that many of your character's are based on real people, where do you find the inspiration for the fictional portion of a character?
Toni~Its really weird, it just comes to me. I am seriously standing in the middle of WalMart, and all of a sudden one of my eyes is all half lidded (not in the sexy way) and my mouth is hanging open, while whoever it is playing in my head. Its scary...
~Trust me on this folks... not pretty... *cringes*

If you could have your readers know just one thing about you, what would it be?
People call me a Shea Weber stalker, but I dont agree with that statement. I just happen to be in love with the sexy hockey player and frequently end up in the same place he is. No big deal.
~Let's just say that Shea has been very understanding and the authorities have yet ot be contacted...

What are your favorite blogs?... ok... you can list more than just one...
I was about to say! Jeez!!! I have a handful of blogs that mean the world to me, Tater's Tail Tails, Insightful minds, The Autumn Review, Dreaming in the Pages, Book Junkie, A Tasty Read, Guilty Pleasures, and of course, Nose in a Book.
~Yeah... *jumping up & down and clapping like a fan girl*

Which hockey game is the most memorable you have ever attended?... alright... you can put more than one here, too... (goodness, authors can be pushy *winks*)
